Phyiohormones play critical roles in the coordination of plant growth and development. Among classical plant hormones, auxins are the most important because they control more fundamental and diverse aspects of plant physiology and development. Determinating the mechanisms of action of auxins will make a major contribution to our understanding of plant science. Despite a vast number of reports on physiological studies of auxins, very little information is avail-able on the mechanisms of action of auxins in molecular terms. One way to elucidate the mode of action of auxins is to clone auxin-regulated genes and to identify the functions of their products. A study of the hormonal activation of transcription of these genes should resolve the signal-transduction systems involved in this process. This review provides a summary of the available information on the identification, function and modulation of expression of auxin-regulated genes.
