The concentrations of K^+, Na^+ and Cl^- in the cytoplasm of Lamprothamnium succinctum, a brackish water Characeae, are about 137, 47 and 86 mM respectively. The concentration of K^+ in the cytoplasm is of the same order as that in the cell sap, while the concentration of Na^+ and Cl^- are much lower than those in the cell sap (i.e., 140 mM Na^+, 370 mM Cl^-). In the brackish water, in which the plant grows, the internodes is never excitable electrically. However, it acquires excitability when it is kept in a mannitol-pond water. The action potential thus elicited is accompanied by a temporary cessation or slow down of the cytoplasmic streaming.
