Molecular analysis of the genes expressed during somatic embryogenesis in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.)

Abstract

A cDNA library of cucumber embryogenic callus was screened for the genes related to embryogenesis. Among three isolated genes, one cse-1 was sequenced and analyzed. It showed high level of identity to B2 protein isolated from carrot embryos (92%) and to gda-1 protein isolated from pea apical tissue (80%). Computer analysis showed that cse-1 was a neutral protein and could be classified to peripheric proteins. Southern blot indicated that it was a single copy gene what was revealed by in situ hybridization to cucumber chromosomes. These results suggested that cse-1 could be involved in embryogenesis.
