The province of Nemuro, which is situated in the eastern end of Hokkaido, has several hot springs in its mountainous part of the area. It is believed that all of the springs- Rausu, Kawakita, Yorousi and Pausibetu- belong to muriated springs. the writer studied the thermal flora of these hot springs in the last summer, August 1940, and collected 68 tubes of materials. In this survery 34 species and varieties of thermal algae are observed. they are 23 Cyanophyceae, 8 Bacillariophyceae, and 2 Chlorophyceae. All of these thermal algae are given in a table. the Rausu Hot Spring has the water temperature of 99 ℃ and a pH of 8.4 at one of its vents. the vegetation, however, flourishes at temperature 24-58.4 ℃ and at pH 8.0-8.2. here 14 species of Cyanophyceae, I Chlorophyceae and 3 Bacillariophyceae are found. Among them, Synechococcus elongatus var. amphigranulatus, Phormidium fragile and Ph. laminosum are most abundantly developed. In the Kawakita Hot spring, the water temperature-range in which the thermal algae grow, is 30-42℃ and pH 6.3-7.1. here 7 specias of Cyanophycase, I Chlorophyceae and 5 Bacillariophyceee are observed. the abundant occurrance of Microcystis flos-aquae is a noticeable phenomenon. Cyanidium caldarium is also found in a water of pH 6.9. Bacillariophyceae are fairly abundant. In the Yorousi Hot Spring, the water temperature-range is 31.3-62.6℃ and its pH 7.1-7.8. the Cyanophycean algae are dominant. Besides 10 species of Cyanophyceae, only one diatom is found. In the Pausibeti Hot Spring the water temperature-range is 44.8-59℃ and its pH 7.1-7.8. 9 species of Cyanophyceae and I of Bacillariophyceae are found. In general, the thermal vegetation of this spring is much alike to that of the preceeding spring. Six species of algae are to be newly added to the japanese thermal flora. they are as follows : microcystis flos-aquae, Synechococcus eximius, Calothrix fusca, Ulothrix variabilis, Achnanthes linearis and Lyngbya nemuroensis. The last named is described as new to science.
