We developed a prototype system for the LHD(Large Helical Device)monitoring system. The system performs both(1)realtime monitoring of relatively slow data for over 2,000 channels, and(2)eventdriven monitoring of relatively fast data. Such a system needs high extendability to cope with growing scales, and high flexibility to enable observations in varied viewpoints. We adopted multicast on ethernet and SSTM(Shared Short Term Memory)mechanism for extendability, and VTO(Virtual Target Object)mechanism for flexibility. In our system, the workstations and the processes can share data without duplicating costs, and the application programs can obtain meaningful data just by specifying the name of the data.
