To understand the observed characteristics of long-range transport of pollutants in East Asia, an atmospheric transport model which includes detailed chemical reactions, the STEM (Sulfate Transport Eulerian Model; Carmichael et al, 1986), was applied. Model includes the detailed NH3-NO3-NH4 NO3 thermodynamical equilibrium mechanism and the heterogeneous reaction from SO2 (gas) to aerosol sulfate. Numerical simulation with STEM code was conducted from Feb. 4 to Feb. 28, 1992 and then the numerical results were compared with detailed high-time resolution (4-8 hour interval) aerosol monitoring data set at Tsushima, Ogori and Seoul.<BR>The STEM model successfully simulated the typical time variation of observed concentrations (both SO42- and NO3-). It was found that wind pattern variations associated with a synoptic scale pressure system are extremely important for the transport of pollutants. Sensitivity analysis shows that most of the observation data located within the heterogeneous reaction rate 0.5-2.0%/h. Model predicted the large fraction of HNO3 in Tsushima Island even in winter, which is because of the shortcoming of NH3 during the long-range transport over the ocean. Analysis of total dry deposition amount during the period of numerical simulation is also discussed.
