Electrocardiographical investigation was carried out on thirty-ont adult mongrel dogs under the following experimental conditiotis: (1) pouring of Ringer's solution into the thoracic cavity, (2) surgical removal of the lung unilaterally and occlusion of the right or left pulmonary artery, (3) mechanical injury made on the mitral valve, (4) amputation of the right auricle and fixation of the auricular wall in formalin, and (5) ligation of Bachmann's bundle. The mitral and the pulmonary P wave have been presented in the typical abnormal pattern of the P wave by electrocardiography. The present investigation suggested that no linear relationship might exist between the experimental condition simulating several types of lesions in the atria and the abnormal patterns of the P wave observed in the experimental cases. Especially, when loading was done indirectly against the atria, variable responses were observed to it. It was difficult to assume that the damaged portions of the atrium or the pulmonary circulatory system might be presented as any abnormality in the P wave of the electrocardiogram. It was presumed that the function of the interauricular part might be related to the duration of the P wave and activated as a joint connecting the right and left atrium functionally.
