H2 molecules in a vacuum chamber were nonresonantly ionized by an intense visible laser pulse, and the number of photoelectrons produced was measured as a function of H2 pressure. The signal intensity was proportional to H2 pressure in the range from 1× 10-3 to 1× 10-6 Pa. The present result showed experimentally that the detection of laser-induced photoelectrons can be applied for the measurement of pressure in the ultrahigh-vacuum range.
