Growth form tactics (GFT) of Rumex obtusifolius grown in three types of gaps was examined in relation to its ecological control. Gaps differing in shape, round, oval and lanky oval, and 707cm2 in size (Fig. 1), were made in a single sowing stand of white clover (WC), orchardgrass (OG) and reed canarygrass (RCG). We defined GFT as the means for a plant to maintain and/or develop space for growth in the process from establishment to seed production based on morphological plasticity. The GFT of R. obtusifolius in each gap was analyzed compared with the GFT in control plants that were not influenced by neighbors.
The plant height of WC was lower than that of R. obtusifolius which grew with WC. The GFT of R. obtusifolius in the WC stand was very similar to that of the control plants (Fig. 2), while the plant height of OG and RCG was higher than that of R. obtusifolius grown with these forage grasses. R. obtusifolius both in OG and RCG stands showed the following GFT, i. e. elevation of outer leaves (Fig. 4) and elongation of the petioles (Fig. 7). The plants were eventually able to produce flower-buds under the most unfavorable conditions (Fig. 5).
The more the gap shape became round, the more the growth of R. obtusifolius was accelerated in the WC stand. However, growth of R. obtusifolius was markedly suppressed in the OG and RCG stands and differences in biomass caused by the gap shape were not evident (Fig. 5).
