Three-dimensional numerical simulation was conducted by making use of a RANS approach for the flow in a rib-roughened square duct and discussions are given for the related thermal fields. The rib discussed here is an oblique discrete rib : a rib attached with a certain angle of attack against the main flow. and whose both spanwise side-ends are detached from the duct sidewall. In the first half of this paper, the angle of attack effect to heat transfer performance is investigated. Main part of the paper compares the performance of the aforementioned oblique discrete rib with other kinds of ribs. Consequently, heat transfer enhancement was obtained by oblique discrete rib with moderate increase of pressure loss. Furthermore, the existing gap produced a dramatic improvement by means of enhancing local heat transfer even in the vicinity of the rib rear wall.
