The lip function associated with lip sealing was studied by recording the electromyographic (EMG) activity of the lips, while dummies were placed on the upper incisors to increase overjet. Subjects were divided into 10 competent lip group and 11 incompetent lip group by combination of several methods. Four main findings were derived from this study : 1) Two groups showed no significant differences in cephalometric measurements except for the vertical position of the mandible. 2) EMG parameters of lower lip were significantly correlated with overjet in the competent lip and incompetent lip groups, respectively. 3) The slope of regression line between EMG activity of the lower lip with the lip in contact and overjet was significantly higher in the incompetent lip group than in the competent lip group. 4) The slope of the regression line between the rate of difference in the EMG activity and overjet was significantly higher in the competent lip group than in the incompetent lip group. It is suggested that increased overjet by labial tipping of the upper incisors is affecting the lip incompetence and lip incompetence is improved by decreasing overjet in the competent lip subjects. However, lip incompetent should be improved by other method in the incompetent lip subjects.
