Hydroxyapatite granules (HAP) and Tricalcium phosphate granules (TCP), both of which are frequently used in periodontal surgical therapy, were implanted to study the difference in the time-related reactions between periodontal tissues and the implanted tissues.<BR>Three-wall bone defects were created artificially in the mandibular molars of 18 adult mongrel dogs for the experiment, and histological observation an measurement were carried out for a period of from three days to three months. In the present experiment, bone tissue reaction was particularly studied, with special attention to the morphology of the side of the root surface and the osteoid. As a result, HAP was found to remain in the form of a matrix in the bone tissues, and TCP was revealed to be resorbed through phagocytosis by macrophages and replaced by bone tissues. There were already differences in the amount and pattern of new bone formation and the osteoid two and three weeks after the implantation. The side of the root surface was affected in the control group, but not in either implantation group. From these results, although both implantation materials are practicable as a material for bone implantation, the above differences should be considered in their application to the periodontal region and these materials should be further studied.
