Articulation of patients with mandibular prognathism (5 males and 10 females) was compared with that of persons with normal bite (5 males and 5 females) as control. The articulation was successively examined at the first visit to the hospital, immediately before surgical operation , 1 month, 3 months and 6 months after the operation. All articulating examinations were performed with Japanese vowels and consonants. Subjective disorder of the patients was examined by questionnaires, and objective disorder was examined by intelligibility test. In some experiments, articulations of vowels and consonants were analyzed by a sound analysis system. The results were as follows : 1 . Subjective disorders Articulation of the patient by the questionnaires showed difficult to pronounce dentals and alveolars. 2. Objective disorders 1) Intelligibility of single-words Intelligibility of the patient by the first medical examination showed abnormal compared with that of normal person, and this became worse until immediately before surgical operation. However, the intelligibility was improved with the lapse of time after the operation. 2) Consonants The abnormal articulation of consonants excluding velars improved after the operation. 3) Vowels The articulation point of vowels estimated from the first- and second-formants relationship was restored to that of the normal person. 4) Sound pressure The pressure of sound /s/ of the patient became strong compared with that before the operation The present study has shown the improving process of patient articulation during orthodontic treatments, and this maybe usefull for the treatment in the future as the articulation guidance.
