A thirty-year old female patient with a severe skeletal open bite was reported indicating the change in oral functions before and after orthodontic treatment with orthognathic surgery. The results were as follows ; 1) The discrepancy between the opening and closing phases was small and the maximum velocity was stable, compared with that before treatment, in jaw opening and closing movements. Both the right and left sides of movement paths were stable and the end of those movement paths was convergent after the treatment. 2) The difference between the two sides of masticatory muscle activity was small and the activity of masseters in the maximum biting phase increased after the treatment. Subsequently, the harmony between the temporal and masseter muscles was regained. 3) The occlusal contact area and biting force increased after the treatment. 4) The articulation function improved in the early stage, but some articulation was not restored untill much lates after the treatment. From these results, it was thought that the evaluation of oral functions was the most important factor in order to examine stability after orthodontic/orthognathic treatment in skeletal open bites. It was also suggested that the evaluation of articulation after the treatment was efficient as a method of judgement for the adaptability of tongue function.
