Description of a New Species of Acyrthosiphon (Homoptera, Aphididae), with Notes on Damage It Causes to Daphnes

Abstract

Acyrthosiphon argus MIYAZAKI, n. sp., is described from the daphne, Daphne odora (Thymelaeaceae), in Japan. Heavy infestation of the aphid often causes intense defoliation which may result in death of the host plant. The aphid seems to live parthenogenetically on daphnes throughout the year. Available information on the distribution of the aphid in Japan is presented.
