A New Genus and Species of the Primitive Orthocladiinae (Diptera, Chironomidae) from Japan

Abstract

The adults, male and female, immature forms, pupa and larva, of a new genus and species found in Japan of a primitive group of the subfamily Orthocladiinae, Pseudobrillia komorii, are herein described and illustrated. The new genus is unique in its combination of the presence of simple and long gonostyli in the male hypopygium, strongly divided tergite IX in the female genitalia, 4 pairs of scutal tubercles on the pupal thorax, and lateral fringes of 4 setal tufts on the larval body segments V-X.
