Abstract
Larval growth in the damselfly, Mnais pruinosa costalis, was investigated on the upper reaches of the Sakai River, in the northwest region of Kanagawa Prefecture. Larvae increased from August to October, and then decreased. Larval population was stable in the winter, and the sex ratio in the larvae was roughly 1 : 1. Frequency distribution in the body length was close to normal in each month. The body length in March was not significantly different over 4 years. At the site studied, the damselfly was univoltine, hatching in summer and emerging in April of the following year. The damselflies from the Sakai River were nearly the same in the adult abdominal length as those from Hokkaido, suggesting that the latter should take two or more years to complete one generation.
