The Milliped Genus Levizonus (Polydesmida, Xystodesmidae) in Japan

Abstract

Japanese millipeds of the genus Levizonus ATTEMS are revised. Two species are recognized : Levizonus montanus (TAKAKUWA) and L. takakuwai (VERHOEFF) in Hokkaido, the northernmost main island of Japan. Three new synonyms are proposed : Profontaria VERHOEFF and Ezodesmus TAKAKUWA are synonymized with Levizonus, and Japonaria (Japonaria) hamuligera KRAUS with L. montanus. Generically Levizonus seems most closely related to Parafontaria VERHOEFF occurring in Japan.
