Seasonal Timing of Mate-Searching Activity in Males of Two Congeneric Paper Wasps, Polistes snelleni and Polistes chinensis, (Hymenoptera, Vespidae)

Abstract

The seasonal timing of male mate-searching activity was investigated in two sympatric temperate paper wasps, P. snelleni and P. chinensis, in Japan. Mate-searching activity was most vigorous in late August and early September for P. snelleni. In contrast, it was in late October for P. chinensis. This difference corresponded to the differences in seasonal timing of female insemination reported previously.
