Background: Apocrine carcinoma is rare, accounting for less than 1% of mammary carcinoma. The presence of apocrine cells in mammary carcinoma tissue is regaded as a rather nonmalignant marker, Careful, comprehensive cytological examination is thus required to diagnose apocrine carcinoma.
Case: All 3 cases of apocrine carcinoma reported here were diagnosed by aspiration cytology. Considerable cytological atypia with pleomorphic and hyperchromatic nuclei, specially distinct macronucleoli, and abundant acidophilic granules in cytoplasm are characteristic of apocrine carcinoma.
Conclusion: Immunochemical staining for GCDFP-15 in surgical material was positive. In electron microscopical examination, abundant mitochondria with considerable destruction and vesiculated secretory granules and pronounced macronucleoli were detected, indicating apocrine carcinoma.
