Peak horizontal ground accelerations (PGAs) larger than 800 cm/s^2 were observed at least 13 sites on the ground during an intraplate earthquake, the 2003 Miyagiken-oki earthquake (M_j7.1). In order to clarify the causes of the large PGAs, I analyze the strong motion records. The influential causes are found to be the large site amplifications at frequencies higher than 5 Hz at rock sites in the Kitakami mountain region near the earthquake. In addition, small decay of spectra at frequencies higher than frnax as well as high amplitude (six times of typical crustal earthquakes) of acceleration source spectra between comer frequency and fmax also contribute to the large PGAs.
