Abstract

We sent out questionnaires to elementary, junior high and high school teachers working in Chiba city or nearby area. We asked them questions about the use of open spaces for environmental education and its problems. The results of the survey were as follows. Open spaces were recognized as the place where children can came into contact with nature, and they were already used in school classes and extracurricular activities. Small and neighbouring parks were frequently used at present, though more than half of the respondents answered that open spaces with various organisms such as large parks, urban forests and botanical gardens were ideal for environmental education. Free texts written by the respondents indicated that open spaces that were safe for children, close to the school, not artificial but natural and with various organisms were preferable for environmental education use.
