We examined the factors contributing to the persistence of a threatened plant species Penthorum chinense population in abandoned paddy fields. We surveyed species composition and environmental conditions at paddy fields abandoned for 6 years, and seed bank of P. chinense at cultivated paddy fields neighboring to a P. chinense habitat. The stand groups were classified into three types, Typha latifolia type, Solidago altissima type and Polygonum thunbergii- Leesia japonica type at the second division of TWINSPAN. T. latifolia type occurred at a flooded site, and the latter two types at wet sites without flooding. P. chinense occurred with high frequency and coverage at T. latifolia type. The result of canonical correspondence analysis suggested that the vegetation type at the surveyed site was affected by light and soil moisture condition, although the present distribution of P. chinense was controlled only by light condition. The results of the present study suggested that the persistence of P. chinense population at the surveyed site was affected by two factors as follows, (1) the formation of light and soil moisture condition appropriate to the germination of P. chinense immediately after abandonment, and (2) the changes of soil moisture into flooded conditions in the course of abandonment period.
