Abstract
A Shiga toxin 2-producing, intiminnegative enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) belonging to serotype O86 : NM was isolated from a child who died of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). This EHEC strain exhibited a strong D-mannose-resistant hemagglutinating activity (MRHA) that was detected with human and bovine erythrocytes. In contrast, intimin-positive EHEC strains belonging to serotypes O157 : H7,O26 : H11,O111 : HUT, or O145 : NM exhibited no detectable MRHA activities. The data suggest that the HUS-associated EHEC belonging to serotype O86 : NM possesses a novel MRHA, instead of intimin, as a putative adherence factor.
