抄録

The earliest folding fan shop signboards seen in pictorial records are in the Machida version of the Rakuchu-rakugai-zu (Views Inside and Outside of the Capital) produced during the latter part of the Muromachi period (1338-1573). This Machida version of the Rakuchu-rakugaizu depicts many shops and we know that signboards are illustrated at four of the fan shops that are depicted. Folding fan shop signboards at the time imitated the shape of the folding fan and were displayed at the front of the shop. One to three signs were displayed depending on the shop.
