相対主義の時代の教養教育  [in Japanese] General Education in the Age of Relativism  [in Japanese]

現在の日本、とくに若者のあいだには、相対主義が蔓延している。相対主義の効用は、かたくなに先入見にしがみつくことから人を開放するところにある。先入見から開放されたなら、さまざまな可能性を試みるように行動して良いはずなのに、たまたま手近にあるものに安易にしがみつく結果をもたらした。教養教育を受けたものは、このような安直な解答に抵抗できなければならない。本稿では、先入見にとらわれずさまざまな可能性に挑戦できるような存在をゼネラリストと定義して、その教育について考察する。ゼネラリスト教育のひとつの目的は、「知的ふるさと」の構築を通して、学生のアイデンティティを確立することである。そのためには、彼らの能力を明らかに超える課題に挑戦させることが必要となる。また、その問題は、われわれの社会の人工的性格を際だたせるものであることが望ましい。

In present-day Japan, especially among young people, relativism is widespread. It is a good effect of relativism to liberate persons from being possessed by a foolish preconception. As a result of liberation, they should have tried various possibilities. But most of them have clung easily to something at hand accidentally. An educated person has to resist such a temptation to accept easy and simple solution. In this paper we define a generalist as a person who is not prepossessed by prejudice and investigate various possibilities. We conclude that it is a goal of general education for every student to establish the sense of identity through construction of his/her spiritual (or intellectual) hometown. For the purpose of this work, it is necessary to make them challenge difficult problems exceed their capacity. And it is desirable that the problems are suitable for recognition of artificial nature of our society.
