18世紀後半から19世紀はじめにかけて,鉱山技師であり,炭鉱監督官のジョン=カーは南ヨークシアで坑内運搬の発展に努力した。彼はまた1797年にThe Coal Viewer and English Builder's Practical Companionという1冊の本を刊行した。この本は彼の炭鉱監督官としての貴重な経験に裏づけられた著作であった。本稿においてかつて希製本であったカーの著作をとおして彼がイギリス産業革命期にいかに坑内運搬を改善したかを明らかにしたい。さらに1930年代に路面電車に50年以上関係してきたシェフィールドの市議会議員,F.ブランドはカーの著作に強い関心を示し,その入手のための古書店や公立図書館などとの書簡のやり取りをしていた。この過程を追っていくと,炭鉱監督官カーの別な側面が明白になって来るので併せてそれも紹介したい。

John Curr, the mining engineer and the coal viewer, made great contributions to the development of underground haulage in South Yorkshire collieries during the Industrial Revolution. In 1797 he published a book on coal-mining technology, The Coal Viewer and English Builder's Practical Companion, where his inventions in underground haulage were recorded. In this paper I reveal how he improved underground haulage in the collieries superintended by him-namely, by examining underground cast-iron plate rails and the four wheeled trucks (Corves) he devised-by reference to his book, The Coal Viewer, which was rare until reprinted in 1970.
