抄録

This study bases on the survey of traditional timber building stock and their habitants in the central area of Kyoto city in 1996 and 1997, which executed the field survey of all objective buildings, questionnaire and in-depth interview for the habitants. As a results, 8000 of timber buildings were counted in this area and their characteristics such as facade type, present condition, size and etc. became clear. This paper especially argues that 1) 90% of the buildings have traditional facade to some extent, 2) 13% preserve all elements of traditional facade, 3) It seems getting serious problem that the condition of most building becomes worse, 4). The extent of facade changes and building size correspondingly trends bipolarized, 5) Stock distribution characteristically differs in streets, blocks and area.
