フレッチャー・スティール(1885-1971)は,アメリカ合衆国におけるランドスケープ・デザインの近代主義運動の萌芽に強く間わった人物である。本稿では,1920年代から30年代にかけてスティールが著した論説に見いだされる近代主義的な思考を抽出するが,その過程において,特にフランス近代主義の庭園デザインを評価する視点に着目する。庭園の装置がもたらす視覚的効果,三次元空間における幾何学的造形,近代主義建築との空間的関係,の3点から庭園独自の空間構成のあり方を導く論理の展開過程を再構築し,後の近代主義デザインの展開にはたした役割を論じる。

Fletcher Steele (1885-1971), American landscape architect, played a critical role in development of modernism in landscape design in the United States throughout 1920s and 30s. His extensive and detailed study of the French gardens by the modernist designers such as Tony Gamier, Gabriel Gevrekian, Andre Vera, Pierre Legrain, and others have delivered several conceptual thoughts on the treatment of garden space. It is his claim that artifacts in gardens to generate visual illusion, composition of geometrical forms in three dimensional space, spatial relationship with modernist architecture, all these concepts lead to developing space composition which represents a critical factor of modernist space in landscape.
