Abstract

The present report outlines research on quantitative measurement of standing ability and describes a system for evaluating and training posture control. Many handicapped and aged persons have trouble standing. Most of them are unable to maintain the same standing posture, and are thrown off-balance. In most rehabilitation systems, these patients are trained to improve their standing ability with parallel bars. Another general training method is pushing the patient's body with the physical therapist's hand. We have developed new equipment to generate tilting motion in a standing floor in order to evaluate and improve standing ability. This floor is composed of a gimbal mechanism with two actuators, and the period and amplitude of this tilting motion can be controlled. In addition, a special feature of these actuators is used not only to generate the tilting motion but to sense an external moment. Therefore, this system is able to give the tilting motion as an external force and to record a change of moment on its standing floor through the patient's foot as a change in standing balance, and, at the same time, record the angles of inclination of each part of patient's body with the inclinometers. With this system, we can measure a change of balance and a change of posture against the tilting motion of the standing floor. Though accurate results cannot be presented because of insufficient experiments (121 healthy and 4 handicapped persons), the direction of the distortion of balance, the active forces and the torque operating each joint and the change in the center of gravity can be evaluated. This system has the potential to be an effective evaluating and training system for the standing ability in the rehabilitation fields.
