Abstract

There is a need to evaluate newly developed prostheses by fitting them on amputees. However, it is difficult to enlist the cooperation of amputees, because they are usually occupied with their jobs and have very limited time for evaluation. Even when we are able to get their cooperation, we must keep them waiting a long time because of the various problems that are so often involved with such experiments. We developed a simulated prosthesis which is installed with knee-joint and foot-ankle assemblies. Normal subjects can wear it with a knee bent. The device simulates actual through-knee or above-knee prosthesis. In this paper we describe how our prosthesis is constructed and what differences there are between our prosthesis and above-knee prosthesis for gait analysis. Furthermore, we report our experiences with its application to evaluating our newly developed prostheses, such as foot-ankle assemblies, sensory feedback systems and load-actuated knee breaks.
