We investigated the breakfast eating trend of 129 elementary school children in Kagoshima City, November 2002. The results were as follows: Ninety four percent of the children ate staple food, 44% ate main dish, and 47% eat side dish or soup. Fifty two percent ate boiled rice as staple food, 33% eat bread, 5% ate noodles, and 5% ate cereal. The children eating all kinds of dishes together, staple food, main dish, side dish or soup, were 26%. The children who ate only staple food were 33%. The average food intake was 5.8. If the staple food was boiled rice rather than bread, the ratio of eating all kinds of dishes together was higher. Sixty five percent of children ate all color food groups together, red, yellow, and green by three-color food group. When the staple food was boiled rice, the rate of eating all color food group to gether was significantly higher than when it was bread. The results show breakfast of children in Kagoshima City was very poor.
