This study was designed to investigate multi -sided scaling of exposed cementum (group S), root planing of exposed cementum (group R), exposed cementum (group EC) and intact cementum (group IC).<BR>The results were as follows:<BR>1. The values of Ca, P and Ca/P by X-ray microanalyzer were the lowest in group IC, followed by group R, group S and group EC.<BR>2. The scanning electron microscopical observation showed that distinct striae with the curette type scaler were seen in group S, and that these striae tended to be weak in group R.<BR>3. The relative concentrations of target elements in Ca, P, F and N were lower in group R than in group S by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.<BR>4. The contact angles in group S and in group R showed values similar to those of group IC.
