Abstract
The purpose of this study was to survey the awareness of stimulation at San-inko (an acupuncture point), which may be applied during prenatal, perinatal and postnatal care. Data were collected from 72 midwives working in the maternity wards of general hospitals. All of the subjects recognized the name of San-inko, and 62 midwives (86%) could point out its location. Information regarding stimulation of San-inko in pregnant women began to be recognized in 1989 and was spread by 'education for nursing students' and 'communication with colleagues'. The majority of midwives regarded 'induction or augmentation of labor', 'relief of labor pain' and 'relaxation during labor' as effects of its stimulation. Most midwives applied stimulation to this point expecting the effects described above. However, it was described in ancient textbooks that stimulation of San-inko was contraindicated in pregnant women because it would induce abortion, and only 10% of responders had this information. Stimulation of San-inko was applied to pregnant women mainly using digital compression and hot foot bath by 57 midwives (79%), and was estimated as effective by 40% of these midwives. Although the effect of stimulation of San-inko on pregnant women was not sufficiently determined, its stimulation was generally known by midwives as one of the measures to care for pregnant women. However, midwives ambiguously understood its effectiveness and details of the appropriateness.
