Abstract
We investigated how maternity exercises, such as pelvic floor muscle exercise, stretching, and walking, will affect delivery. Of 161 primigravidas who had no abnormality nor complications during pregnancy (including Caesarean section, vacuum extraction etc), 57 primigravidas who had normal vaginal delivery were used for investigation. The survey was carried out from January 2000 to July 2001. The state of their practices and their strength were divided into "exercise" and "no exercise" group. And the degrees of strengths were classified into seven different levels ranging from 0 to 7. 47/57 primigravidas did exercise, and the rest did not exercise at all. Comparison of scores of exercise and the delivery time were: the time of first stage delivery for, the exercise groups of more than 3 levels 393±198 minutes while those of the non exercise group was 640±428 minutes. As we can see from these results, the difference was significantly clear. Among the exercise group, their favorite practice was "walking". 45/47 primigravidas, did walking and exercised as well. On the other hand, Primigravidas who had exercised only walking showed no significant time differences of first stage delivery compared to those of to no exercise group. Our Investigation clearly showed that maternity exercises will effect and will reduced the time of first stage of delivery for primigravidas. Since the time of the first stage delivery is shorter, it helps to reduce the fatigue and tiredness after childbirth.
