Abstract
Objective: This study was conducted to assess the effects of the practical application of self-care behavior during pregnancy on delivery and the sense of achieving a maternal role. Methods: 178 primiparae were surveyed until 57 days after delivery regarding their practical application of self-care behavior during pregnancy, their delivery (duration of gestation period, newborn weight and problems during delivery) and their sense of achieving a maternal role. Results: 1) There was no correlation between implementation of self-care behavior and delivery. 2) The sense of achieving a maternal role was higher among women who effectively implemented self-care behavior. 3) 17% of those women who experienced a stronger sense of achieving a maternal role were explained by preparations for taking on a maternal role as well as physiological and physical self-care behavior during pregnancy. Conclusion: Physical and physiological self-care behavior during pregnancy were suggested to be mutually complementary and lead to the development of a relationship between mother and child after delivery as well as self-growth as a mother.
