Abstract

The investigation on the vertical distribution of mussel (Mytilus gallo-provincialis LAMARCK) on concrete walls was carried out. The upper limit of the distribution of this species is near mean sea level, the lower limit extreme spring low water-mark. But, under different condition, the lower limit of the distribution extends further downward. The upper limit may be determined by desiccation, while the lower limit by competition among sessile animals. The growth of individuals is retarded on upper portion of mussel zone. In case mussels are exposed to the air, as proportion of this time exceeds 30 per cent, significant differences occur on the growth.
