Abstract

The water-insoluble organic matrix in the nacreous layer of Pinctada fucata was solubilized by formic acid. As a membrane was synthesized from the solubilized component by evaporating formic acid, this reaction may mainly be due to the break of the hydrogen bond between the peptide chains. As a result, the analysis of the solubilized component will provide valuable information about the structure and function of the water-insoluble organic matrix and hence lead to a more precise understanding of the role of the organic matrix for shell formation.
