We analyze the influences of usage and ruled lines on characters to aid in creating a data base of unconstrained handwritten characters. Analysis of character size shows that the ruled lines have little influence. We found, however, that characters vary depending on their position (at the beginning or end of a sentence) and use (single character or idiom), so the quality of the data base is influenced by what part of a document we extract characters from.
