In the history of the so-called "recluse literature", Tao Yuanming (365-427) in China and Saigyo (1118-1190) in Japan are worthy of special mention for they are both pioneers of the recluse literature in their own countries. Seemingly the recluse literature in Japan is similar to that in China, but actually we can find some differences between them. It is not only the difference of style, but also the difference of culture and society of two countries. In Tao Yuanming's case, he retired from the political world while Saigyo led a secluded life for a religious reason. In style, Tao Yuanming cultivated fields as an ordinary peasant, seeking for a transcendent state through a simple rural life. However, Saigyo renounced his family searching for the Pure Land in the West as a Buddhist quester. These two types of recluse literature can been seen as the origins of two literary genealogies in two countries. My article will analyze the difference between Tao Yuanming and Saigyo as an example.
