Abstract
Recently the study of human information processing has been increased in the area of psychology. The main tools employed in such research have been "data-driven processing" and "concept-driven processing". This experiment was carried out to make clear the "Human Visual System", in particular the problem of seeing in the "global" or "local" way. Chinese ideographs, or kanji, the most distinctive feature of the Japanese writing system, were used for the stimuli. One kanji was constructed by both many "local kanji" characters and one "global kanji" character. The result indicated that visual information processing (pattern matching or pattern cognition) of kanji was not a serial processing but a parallel processing.
