Abstract

Ordination is a useful tool for comparing community structures of soil animals, and investigating the relation between the community and environments. The best method of ordination is different depending on the cases with preferences of species data, and effect to be detected. Thus, it is important to select an appropriate method for each case. In this review, I showed the point of selecting method, and how to use some representative analyses. Main contents are as follows. 1. NMS can be used for the species data, which we cannot suppose any model. 2. We can select an indirect analysis or a direct analysis in the case with the data including environmental variables. 3. We can choose a unimodal model, if we have SD ≥4 in DCA by segment (linear model in the case of SD <4). 4. We can detrend an arch effect in the unimodel model, by segment or by polynomial. 5. By using covariables, we can remove an effect in which we are not interested. 6. Some experimental designs (ex. Random Block design or Split-Plot design) limit the permutation. We need special settings for permutations in such experimental designs.
