Abstract
A heat transfer enhancement occurred from the flow around fins was studied. Fins were arranged in in-line form on a heated plane and the longitudinal pitch Sp, the plane lateral pitch Sn and the angle θ were varied. The flow around the fins array and the heated plane temperature distribution was visualized by using talc powder and the liquid crystal sheet. The flow pattern could be classified into two categories, i.e., Type A: the fluid goes through the fins in the direction of the main stream, Type B: the flow is turned to the fins direction. In order to assess the heat transfer efficiency, the ratio of the Nusselt number between the heated plane and the air to the pressure loss is defined. The heat transfer efficiency increases as θ and Sp increase and Sn decreases. The heat transfer mechanism depends on three-D flow structure because the heat transfer efficiencies are varied by the fins height.
