Abstract
Wind turbulence has bad influences on performances and fatigue damages of wind turbines. However, the variable speed pitch controlled turbine is a promising choice, sophisticated controllers will be necessary so as to operate satisfactory in turbulent sites. Considering the situation shown above, a robust controller was developed for a variable speed pitch controlled turbine, using Mu-Synthesis. It enables more sophisticated and robust control than H-Infinity by structured uncertainties taken into account in the design. Its robustness in cases of large model errors such as twice as long pitch delay was verified through non-linear simulations. A field test was also carried out and demonstrated its fairly good characteristics. And the measured power curve was significantly improved than former Pl controller. The controller and the design method are expected to provide promising solutions in turbulent conditions such as complex terrains or wind farms.
