The counter-rotating type hydroelectric unit, which is composed of the tandem runners and the generator, has been proposed by the authors. The front and rear runners counter-drive the inner and the outer rotors of the generator, respectively. This unit has advantages that the rotational moment hardly acts on the casing and/or the mounting bed. This advantage is effective to utilize the mini/micro hydropower in coexisting with the natural ecosystem, because it can be easily moored with only one cable to mountain torrents and/or rivers without the civil construction on a large scale. This paper discusses the effect of the runner profiles on the performance, and presents materials of the runner design for applying this unit to various water circumstances.
