Abstract
Double torsion tests of alumina ceramics, which is used for the artificial joints, were carried out in air and physiological saline. The AE signals during crack propagation were measured and the excellent correlation between AE count rate and crack velocity was obtained. It was clarified by the authors' previous works that the maincrack formation could be detected by AE behavior before the final failure. Therefore, it is suggested that the fracture process consist of the maincrack formation and its propagation to final failure. Consequently, the present results enable the life time prediction considering both processes.
