中国から日本へ留学してきた学生数は,統計機関によってその差が大きい。私は当時の留学現場に一番近い立場にあった文部省と日華学会の統計を用いて総数をまとめたいと考えた。今までの研究においてすでに1906-1921年と1927-1944年の総数を明らかにしたのだが,その間の1922-1926年の総数はまだ確認できていない。本稿は,外交史料館の『外務省記録』に保存されている文部省などの統計をまとめ,1922-1926年の5年間の総人数を明らかにしたものである。これによって1906-1944年の中国人留学生の総数がほぼ明らかになり,中国人による日本留学の流れも,総人数の角度から見ることになった。しかし,それは,同一機関の統計ではなく,不完全な数字もあるので,あくまでも概数と理解する必要がある。

The number of Chinese students in Japan varies differently due to the different statistics. I will use the statistics from the Ministry of Education (文部省) and Institute of Japan and China (日華学会) in this paper to examine the number of Chinese students in Japan. Recent studies have shown a clear evidence of the numbers regarding Chinese students in Japan during 1906-1921 and 1927-1944. However, the number of 1922-1926 has not been clarified. In this paper I will clarify the exact number of Chinese students in Japan during the period of 1922-1926 based on the records of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (外務省記録). By clarifying the number of Chinese students in Japan, it will enable us to understand the changes in the number of Chinese students in Japan and find a general picture of Chinese students from a different perspective. Meantime this paper will stress that the number of Chinese students may not be completely correct if we just account it based on a single document.
