Abstract

This paper reviewed the hydrodynamic characteristics of plane nettings, the ropes and some types of otter boards necessary to design the fishing gear, the modeling rules for model testing of fishing gear, and the method of controlling the net position of midwater trawl. The results were summarized as follows: 1) Each experimental formula for calculating the drag coefficient of plane nettings and the ropes of each material used for the fishing gear are presented. 2) Effects of aspect ratio and camber ratio on lift coefficients of otter board are elucidated and the performance of some otter boards is shown. 3) The drag of midwater trawl net and added mass of conical net in accelerated motion are quantitatively evaluated. 4) Some corrections on modeling rules following Tauti's law and Froude's law are presented. Each of these modified modeling rules is effective for model testing of fishing gear on the basis of the results from full scale and model experiments. 5) The method of controlling the net position of midwater trawl to the target fish school is suggested using a graphic representation based on some initial values of warp length or towing speed. 6) A new midwater sampling trawl (MOHT) is developed. It is confirmed that this sampling trawl can almost maintain the constant depth regardless of towing speed during the experiments.
