本研究の目的は、終の棲家として指定介護老人福祉施設で暮らす後期高齢者が、日常的に表現する「お迎えを待つ」とは何かを探ることである。75才以上の高齢者で研究の同意が得られた13名に、面接を実施した。逐語録から死を示す言葉を中心にしたまとまり部分45カ所を選び出し、意味上の要約と関連により質的に分析した。これにより、「お迎えを待つという日常の心境」「お迎えを待つ心境に至る基盤」「家族に期待する」「自分を大切にする」「人を気遣う」「自尊心の喪失」「生活史の一部に位置づけなおす」7つの中グループを抽出し、施設で最期を迎える意思決定をした後期高齢者の「お迎えを待つ」というストーリーラインを描いた。現状をどのように意味づけて生活していくのかという点が、お迎えの待ち方に影響を及ぼすことが示唆された。

The purpose of this investigation is to search what it means waiting death reception" expressed usually by the elderly people aged 75 and over living, as the last dwelling, in a Nursing Home. Interviews were given the 13 elderly people aged 75 and over with consent of this investigation. Choosing 45 parts centered in words indicated death by verbatim theory, a summation and a relation were put in order. Therefore, the following 7 groups were picked up; "the daily mental attitude of waiting for death reception", "A foundation to reach the mental attitude of waiting for reception for death", "expecting of their family", "cherishing the self", "being concerned for others", "forfeiture of self-respect" and, "reposition it in a life cycle". Story lines, "waiting for death reception" of the elderly people's making decision about receiving death in facilities, were drawn. It was suggested that how to live, with making actual condition significant, affects the way to wait for death reception.
