本論文は大学生レベルの英語学習者がそれまでの学習においてどこでつまずいたかを明らかにするための考察である。調査は被験者を年度開始時のプレイスメントテストによって上位と下位の2レベルに分けることから始まり,中学校検定済教科書を下地に作成した全104項目からなる「並べ替えテスト」を計12回実施しデータを収集,分析した。さらに学習指導要領の分類例に従い,学習者がどの学習項目において習得の不足を示しているかを詳細に分析した。その結果24項目において正答率が50%を割り,学習の初期段階において既につまずきが見られることや,その後の学力格差が拡大している現状が明らかとなった。

The purpose of this study is to find out where the Japanese university-level learners are baffled in their process of learning English. The research plans are ; (1) carrying out a placement test in the beginning of the course, (2) classifying them into the right level of the class (upper or lower), (3) drawing up a 12 set of tests (104 items in total) and collecting the data, and (4) scoring their responses and making an analysis, based on "The Course of Study for Lower Secondary School by MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology)". The 104 question items come from the target sentences of a junior high school textbook, which is one of the six textbooks approved by MEXT. They are laid out by the level of difficulty, so that we can illuminate where the testees collapse. These are the grammatical elements which show less than 50% of correctness, and the figure in the parenthesis says the number of the question items ; (1) sentences (8) (2) sentence patterns (5) (3) pronouns (4) (4) verb tenses (1) (5) basic to-infinitives (1) (6) basic gerunds (1) (7) adjectival use of present and past participles (2) (8) others (2). This results concludes that the learners had a tremendous struggle in the earlier stage of their learning process. With having no hope for a restart, their unwillingness of mastering English gets an increase, even misleading them into losing their self-assurance. Our next mission is to set up a tactical curriculum which enables a succeeding of English learning, by assessing a class-size, teaching materials/methods, evaluations and to motivate the learners.
